Martinique Dolphin Watching on the Caribbean Coast
Boats leave the calm leeward side of the island between Anses-d'Arlet and Saint-Pierre, where spinner dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins and short-finned pilot whales feed year-round in the deep water just offshore. Most martinique dolphin watching tours pair the cetacean search with a snorkel stop over the sea turtle grazing beds at Anse Dufour, where green and hawksbill turtles surface to breathe within a few metres of swimmers. Most sightings occur along the leeward Caribbean coast, where the water runs markedly calmer than on the Atlantic side. The animals are resident rather than migratory. Pantropical spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins share the same channel. Sperm whales, the Caribbean's only substantial year-round population, dive in the trench west of the island, occasionally within four kilometres of shore. Turtles belong to the same waters and a different habitat. Both species are protected under French law and monitored through the national action plan for marine turtles in the French Antilles. The marina at Pointe du Bout has become the island's principal departure point for excursions of this kind.
